2016 Barrhaven Community Welcome Fair a Great Success

Every year the Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre (OCCSC) organizes and participates in community events to welcome newcomers to Ottawa introducing them to many people and agencies that can help them settle comfortably and safely. On May 15, 2016, the OCCSC staged the Barrhaven Community Welcome Fair at Mother Teresa High School. The event was attended by Ottawa’s Mayor Jim Watson, 27 business providers and community partners and over 500 residents of Ottawa. It was a resounding success! 001

Over 500 people attended this year’s Welcome Fair

The event began with a warm welcome from Sharon Kan, Executive Director of OCCSC, and an inspiring speech by Mayor Watson, who officially launched the event and had pictures taken with over 50 enthusiastic families in attendance.

Some of the activities at the event included the bouncy castle, hosted by the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts, face painting, balloon animals, arts and crafts, and a collaborative painting “Beautiful Ottawa Welcomes You”, facilitated by the Ottawa Tiancai Arts School with help from the participants. The Ottawa South United Soccer League offered demonstrations of soccer skills and indoor soccer games for the children. OCCSC organized a crawling competition for babies aged 6 to 12 months, and the interactive game, “Chasing Tails”, for older children and their parents.

Laser Fire Extinguishing

We also had on-site diabetes tests for seniors, provided by the Centretown Community Health Centre. Ottawa Fire Services invited families to experience laser fire extinguishing. A “selfie” corner for families and participants was also set-up to capture fun moments of the day.

The purpose of this event was not only to welcome newcomers to Ottawa, but also to support the wildfire victims of Fort McMurray in Alberta by raising funds through the OCCSC’s Happy Kitchen charitable bake sale and the 50/50 lucky draw. The bake sale raised $365 and the draw $150. The revenue was donated to the Canadian Red Cross for Fort McMurray wildfire relief.
