The OCCSC 8th Annual Fundraising Gala was successfully held on Thursday, November 30th at the St. Elias Banquet Centre. CBC reporter Adrian Harewood was our host for the evening. We successfully collected over $50,000, which will be directed towards the programs that can help immigrants fully integrate to Canadian society through our settlement, employment, language training, family counseling, pre-arrival, volunteer & childcare, and Syrian Refugees services.
In its eighth year, the fundraising gala was held western-style. The guests were greeted with delicious snacks and a punch fountain. Four musicians from the Cadenza Quartet (Ottawa Youth Orchestra) greeted the guests with well-known classics at the reception.
More than 360 guests gathered with our staff and volunteers at the St. Elias Banquet Centre, including some special guests; Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Serge Cormier, Parliamentary Secretary of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, MP Mary Ng, City Counselors Riley Brockington, Rick Chiarelli, Michael Qaqish, the representatives from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada, political and business leaders and of course the Chinese community members.
It is worth mentioning that Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, deeply expressed her love of Chinese culture and expectations for the next visit to China with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when she delivered a message on the stage. Serge Cormier, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship, also made a speech, highly praising the important role OCCSC has played during the settlement of new comers in Ottawa. MP Mary Ng also took the stage to bring blessings to this fundraising gala.

In addition to the delicious dinner, the guests also enjoyed wonderful live cultural performances; A Chinese-style opening dance performance from the JinYu Dance Group, folk dances by the AL-ARZ Lebanese Art Group and Baladna Group, as well as a K-pop routine by the Salja Dance Group. This year’s gala also featured a musical performance by a Chinese Canadian singer Sandy Ma, and famed Canadian singer-songwriter Baylianne Rich, who graced us with three of her new songs.
The auction gifts were generously provided by the Mayor of City of Ottawa, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada, Otto’s BMW & Subaru, 3M Canada, several local businesses and service providers.
The ever-popular silent auction returned this year. There were total of 75 collectibles, and featured a rare finely-crafted limited edition crystal porcelain vase with sculpted porcelain Tang Yin’s masterpiece on it. Another fine example of Chinese heritage was the set of master-crafted Jiaozhi-style ceramics on display. In addition, Lion Paving Inc. provided interlock paving services and Onion Auto Service provided a full set of winter tires. All went for high bids during the silent auction.
362 guests bought Gala tickets, and more than 90 people, including performers; volunteers and staff members planned, organized, designed, promoted, performed, took photos, supervised the stage, or sold lucky draw tickets.
24 lucky draw gifts including two top prizes “The Mysterious Gift Basket”, worth $250, and the OCCSC gift basket, which included a brand-name bag, chocolate and fine wine. Other prizes included many wine-and-chocolate gift sets as well as restaurant gift certificates. Onion Auto Service provided each table with a mystery gift. Also, there were charitable sales of artwork and bake goods made by Syrian families throughout the evening. The lucky draw and all the surprises brought the Gala great excitement.
